Understanding Heart Disease in Cats:
HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) is a heart disease and it affects all breeds of cats. In fact “heart disease” is the #1 killer of all cats worldwide. HCM also affects Dogs and Humans. There is no cure for HCM. However, if caught early, it’s possible your cat can live a much longer life with heart medication. Pet Insurance is always recommended along with regular vet visits.
Heart disease in cats in not always genetic/hereditary… HCM can be hereditary or it can be secondary brought on by hypertension, hyperthyroidism, obesity, old age, low Taurine from a poor diet or the ability to absorb the proper amounts of Taurine from their foods.
UC Davis Cardiology and The FDA made an announcement that grain free foods on the market are directly linked to heart disease caused by the added Legumes (lectins) in the foods.
Heart Murmurs are not always an indicator of heart disease. Many Kittens have heart murmurs which they out grow by adulthood. Many adult cats are living full lives with low grade heart murmurs which are referred to as harmless or innocent murmurs and are not associated with heart disease.
HCM does not know “good breeder” or “bad breeder”. HCM affects the very best breeders in the world as well as the bad breeders. There is no such thing as an HCM free cattery… Every Sphynx breeder worldwide is at risk of producing offspring who may develop heart disease. It is estimated that 20% - 25% of the Sphynx Breed is affected. Kittens are not born with heart disease, however, they can be born with a gene or genes that may or may not develop into heart disease at any point in their lifetime. There are many Sphynx who silently carry the responsible genes for heart disease who never develop heart disease. It is unknown why the genes become activated "turned on" in some Sphynx cats while others never develop heart disease.
I have actively scanned my breeding cats on a routine basis for 15 + years with many Board Certified Cardiologists. Scanning is only a tool. Please note, clear scanning parents is not a guarantee your kitten / cat will not develop HCM. Unfortunately, "Clear Scanning Cats" can still produce positive offspring. A breeding cat can be a silent carrier and never develop heart disease ever in its lifetime and still pass the gene / genes down to its offspring. Or the breeding cat may scan clear multiple times during its breeding years and then later in life develop heart disease long after it has been retired. Scanning is only a tool and it only helps to lower the odds.
HCM is a very complicated disease, it can skip generations and randomly show up even with clear scanning parents. There are multiple genes responsible for HCM in the Sphynx Breed. A new DNA test is being developed for the Sphynx Breed and should be available in 2021. This newly identified gene is estimated to be responsible for about half of the HCM cases. There are still more unknown genes responsible for HCM, but this new DNA test will be an additional tool to help breeders choose the best breeding cats moving forward. This is going to be a long journey for all Sphynx Breeders worldwide and it will not happen quickly. The proper use of this new DNA test will take years and many new generations of carful breeding practices before we see a drop in HCM cases in our beloved breed.
We are hopeful for our future generations.
